Ākina's Te Tiriti Principles Bill Statement

Ākina stands in support of the dissent and concern about the Treaty Principles Bill and gives its tautoko to the most recent report from the Waitangi Tribunal that if this Bill is passed "it would be the worst, most comprehensive breach of the Treaty / Te Tiriti in modern times".

Ākina is concerned about the division the Bill is creating and the damage that is already being done. From the same Waitangi Tribunal report, we note that the “Crown’s process to develop the Bill has purposefully excluded any consultation with Māori, breaching the principle of partnership, the Crown’s good-faith obligations, and the Crown’s duty to actively protect Māori rights and interests.”

Ākina is supporting its tīma to join the hīkoi, and demand better from the Government. As a charitable trust with the privilege of carrying a Māori name, Ākina is committed to contributing to a more equitable society, celebrating the unique role Te Ao Māori plays in Aotearoa New Zealand, and upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and He Whakaputanga.

Ma pango ma whero, ka oti te mahi - with red and black, the work will be done.

Toitū Te Tiriti. Mauri ora ki a tātou. 🖤 ❤️ 🤍
