Emissions Reduction Plan submission
The Emissions Reduction Plan will set out how Aotearoa New Zealand will set the path towards meeting our long-term climate targets. This plan is a key step in the country's transition to a low emissions future.
We, Ākina made a submission to the Ministry for the Environment on the plan because we recognise the existential threats posed by the Climate Emergency, and we believe that business and the Government need to work together and act boldly in order to reduce emissions.
We’re also a climate positive business, an impact-led business, and a member of the Climate Leaders Coalition. We work with many of our clients on improving their impact on the environment. In particular, our recently concluded programme of work with the Government produced 15 recommendations that have significant overlap with the goals of the Emissions Reduction Plan – which is detailed in our submission. We are awaiting the Government’s response to the recommendations.
Throughout our submission we also refer to and express support for the submission made by the Sustainable Business Council/The Climate Leaders Coalition which can be read here.
The Government intends to publish the first Emissions Reduction Plan setting out policies and strategies for meeting emissions budgets by 31 May 2022 in order to align the final plan with Budget 2022.
