Penny Nelson is newly appointed as the Deputy Secretary Sector Strategy at the Ministry for the Environment (start date 29 February), responsible for strategy and evaluation functions, environmental monitoring and reporting, as well as the Ministry’s interests in the science system and climate change.
She was most recently the Sustainable Business Council’s Executive Director, and has worked across business, science and policy on environmental, social and economic issues. Central to Penny’s career has been the brokering of partnerships between private and public sector organisations to make progress on complex issues. She has held senior management roles in the public sector, been a science leader at Landcare Research and a policy manager at DairyNZ.
Penny has an MSc (Resource Management) and a BA (Hons) in Political Science and English. She is married with two children. Penny enjoys tramping, travelling and reading lots of books.
