Rotary Club of Newmarket supporting Kick-Start Award 2018

The Rotary Club of Newmarket and the Ākina Foundation have joined forces for a third year to kick-start Northern based social enterprises by providing $10,000 in cash to a top venture.

Applications for the Award open Monday 6th August 2018 and close midnight Sunday 15th September 2018.

Applications are open to all social enterprises, whether early-stage, operational or well-established. To qualify, applicants must be resident in the top half of the North Island (Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, East Cape) – although the impact of the social enterprise may be local, national or global.

Applicants are required to submit a three-minute video along with a short online application form. Your video should answer the following questions:

  • What social or environmental impact does your social enterprise have (or intend to have)?
  • How do you (or will you) deliver impact and sustain your social enterprise?
  • Why are you the team to make this happen?
  • What difference will $10,000 make to your social enterprise?

If you have questions about the criteria or the application process, please get in touch by emailing

Remember –the most important thing is to tell the story of your social enterprise venture in light of the above criteria, and include any evidence to support the problem or support your approach. Note, we are not judging on how good you are at making or producing a video.

We’ve captured some tips in a video here to help you get started.

In previous years we have hosted a workshop teaching the basics of compelling communication and how to create an online video. If you would find this beneficial please email your interest to

Rotary is a pioneer in philanthropy in New Zealand – they have been a supporter of some of New Zealand’s most valued social causes and now they’re embracing the modern version, social entrepreneurs. Ākina launched a similar initiative in partnership with the Rotary Club of Newmarket in 2016 and again in 2017. The winning entry in 2017 was Cottonseed, an enterprise that empowers refugee and migrant women to take control of their lives. Watch their inspiring video here Cottonseed video.
